Manufacturing is the foundation of national prosperity and also military power. A decline in manufacturing capability is a universal leading indicator of a decline in national well-being and affluence, and the United States has ceded a lot of its postwar manufacturing base to other countries. Recovery of this capability requires us to overcome the dysfunctional and inaccurate paradigm that cheap labor is really cheap, and use productivity improvement techniques that were developed in the United States more than 100 years ago for the express purpose of making American workers sufficiently productive to earn high wages.
